USS United States was the first of the six original frigates authorized for construction by the naval Act of 1797. She was designed by naval architect Joshua Humphreys and built at a shipyard in Philadelphia. She was named by George Washington and launched on 10 May 1797 and commissioned July 11, 1798 with Captain John Barry in command.
